LIFE SCIENCE IMMERSION PROGRAM-INDUSTRY CERTIFICATE
This intensive online certificate program uses industry driven curriculum to give individuals the business acumen to successfully transition into and move up the career ladder in industrial careers. Graduates from this program will be knowledgeable about the highly regulated life sciences business environment and the reality of work in multi-disciplinary project teams to meet business goals. The aim is to shorten the orientation time companies expect as new hires fit into the team-based, multi-disciplinary corporate culture.
Through a combination of web based industry presentations and case studies, graduates of the program will gain:
• Practical understanding of the functional units of a life sciences company;
• Certification that is recognized by life science companies;
• Familiarity with the California regional business environment; and
• Life science networks built on interactions with peers and case study work with experts in the field.
UNIQUE PROGRAM FEATURES
▶ Industry Driven Curriculum: Written by BIOCOM Board members and committees, the LSIP curriculum will feature high-level, expert introductions to the four core modules; Business Environment, Finance, Product/Process Development and Marketing/Sales/Business Development. Through video vignettes and case study examples industry experts will teach students real-life lessons learned and relevant best practices based on their experience.
▶ Individual Action Roadmap: This tool will help participants get started and advance on their career path. The assessment will explore strengths, skill gaps and key actions to focus on when entering and working in the business world. Participants may, in the context of the program, create a personal action plan in which they'll identify strengths and development areas. They'll be given information on how to leverage strengths and be given opportunities to outline development strategies. The output is a personal roadmap and development plan.
▶ Access to the BioCollaborative Learning Community Portal: The BioCollaborative Learning Community Portal will provide information and resources pertaining to individual career transition and those seeking to move up the career ladder. This section includes instructional resources (documents, templates, links to supplemental learning opportunities) designed to assist in participants in their transitional preparedness. Participants will be able to access information, engage in forum discussions, upload and download materials, tools via the BioCollaborative interactive portal. The site will also outline up-to-the-minute industry news and trends and, more importantly, connect unemployed members to internship and career opportunities.

PROGRAM LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Business Environment
Gain appreciation of life sciences business principles and practices, including teamwork, project management, and important communication skills; and values in the regulated business environment.
Understand the life science business environment by targeting information and skills needed for successful interaction and performance.
Finance
Ability to explain financing mechanisms and how they impact day-to-day research and development activities.
Capability to read and understand financial plans, budgets and reports and apply fiscal realities to research and development operations.
Product/Process Development
Ability to explain the integration of translational functions - product, process and regulatory development - and understand the implications on all stages of research and development activities.
Assess the impact of scale, process control, and compliance on bench-scale processes developing into clinical and commercial-scale production.
Marketing/Sales/Business Development
Appreciate the role and importance of marketing, sales, business development and intellectual property in commercialization.
Ability to understand the process of identifying a market and strategies for gaining financial backing, brokering partnerships or commercializing products.
ENROLLMENT / TUITION
The BIOCOM Institute plans to design and launch this intensive online certificate program in June 2011. Funding for this program is available through an ARRA grant entitled "Biotechnology Readiness, Immersion, and Degrees and Certificates for Gainful Employment" (BRIDGE) administered by San Diego State University, College of Extended Studies. The BRIDGE Grant is designed to broaden career opportunities in biotechnology and the life sciences.
Tuition is $1,495 for this online certificate course. A limited number of funded tuitions will be allocated to support unemployed, dislocated, and incumbent workers, as well as veterans, active duty military, and other members of the military community through the BRIDGE Grant.
