The Aging Workforce
How to Maximize Productivity While Minimizing Risk
Fact: By the year 2010, nearly 17% of American workers will be 55 and older.
What does this mean in terms of potential workplace injuries? One in five American desks will be occupied by people who have spent the majority of their lives as employees. Occupational health and safety professionals know that half a lifetime of repetitive stress and awkward positions at work can lead to perpetual discomfort or chronic disability, leaving both employers and employees at risk.
Since few employees are aware of the potentially damaging habits they perpetuate daily at the office, education is the key to maintaining a healthy workforce. Tailoring your workstation to your physical needs with the right ergonomic techniques and tools can help ensure comfort, increase productivity, and reduce the risk of injury. Here are some tips that can help you stay healthy and comfortable for years to come:
Eyes Sit about an arm’s length away from the computer monitor, with the top of the computer screen at, or slightly below, eye level. Use monitor and laptop supports to raise computer screens to eye level for a more comfortable viewing angle.
Shoulders Keep shoulders relaxed and in a neutral position, with elbows close to your sides, while using the keyboard and mouse. Installing a keyboard manager encourages neutral posture and helps relieve the discomfort of long hours of typing.
Wrists Keep wrists in a straight, neutral position with the bottom of your elbows even with keyboard height. Adding a palm support to your mouse set-up also encourages natural, healthy movement and helps prevent contact stress.
Chairs Sit all the way back in your chair with thighs parallel to the floor. Use a foot support to improve circulation while sitting and a back support for proper lumbar support to promote correct posture and maximize comfort.
