Three Great Volunteer Opportunities for the SD Festival of Science & Engineering
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO INSPIRE THE NEXT GENERATION OF SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS
The San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering is looking for volunteers to participate in our annual ASK ME, I'M A SCIENTIST/ENGINEER BOOTH at EXPO DAY on Saturday, March 24, 2012.
As with years past, the Festival will have a lively booth where kids can interact with scientists and engineers. If you make your living in any science or engineering discipline and you want to inspire students, we need YOU for a one-hour shift at PETCO Park on Saturday, March 24. You'll be meeting with kids one-on-one, talking with them, answering their questions, and engaging them in the possibilities of science and engineering.
The booth will be located in the same spot as last year and will incorporate many improvements based on feedback from past participants. The booth will be hosted by the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering students.
To volunteer for a one-hour shift, please complete the quick and easy form on our website by following this link: here.
If you have any questions, please contact Mary Jo at mjball@ucsd.edu
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR A "SECRET SCIENCE FLASH MOB AT EXPO DAY"
We are putting together our first-ever Science Flash Mob, sponsored by Girl Scouts San Diego and created by Eveoke Dance Theatre, and we want YOU to join us! A flash mob is a custom-designed and well-rehearsed dance that happens spontaneously at an event and catches people by surprise. A flash mob is a fabulous way to bring large, dynamic, and creative energy to our Festival. We are recruiting 75 people from the community to join 15 professional dancers from Eveoke Dance Theatre to surprise the audience at PETCO Park on Saturday, March 24, at 11:55am.
You will be learning a 3-4 minute hip-hop dance designed for all levels. There will also be inspirational text designed into the music that describes the mission of the festival and the importance of science and engineering to our local and global community. Rehearsals will be fun and focused. You don't have to attend all three rehearsals to perform. However, we encourage you to attend at least two if you can, as well as the final run through at PETCO Park. You will receive a video online for practicing at home.
A flier is attached with more information. To sign up for this FUN activity, please go to: http://www.sdsciencefestival.com/flashmob. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Jo at mjball@ucsd.edu
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR EXPO DAY AND FESTIVAL WEEK EVENTS
Once again this year, we need over 250 volunteers to help us with many jobs (some are new jobs) at EXPO DAY and during the Festival Week. Please go to our website and sign up now! Please also send this link to your friends and any groups who might be interested in volunteering.
We will have a Volunteer Orientation Session at PETCO Park on Sunday, March 4, at either 10:00am or 12:00pm. You will receive your t-shirt, button, posters, and learn about any changes to EXPO DAY for 2012. We want you to attend this orientation even if you have been a volunteer before.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact Mariana Celestino by email at mcelestino@ucsd.edu
Announcing the 10th Annual High Tech High Science Fair
10th Annual High Tech High Science Fair
Wednesday, February 1st from 1:30-3:30
High Tech High Commons
This is in preparation for the county screening which is being held February 16th, for HTH. There will be a range of projects including:
Behavioral Science
Biochemistry
Botany
Environmental Science
Microbiology
Medicine and Health
Zoology
and more!
We hope you can judge our fair once again. Please let me know if you are available and which category(ies) you would like to judge. Similar to last year, Tom Fehrenbacher and Julia Gordon mentored many Humanities students with projects in the Behavioral Sciences this year. Hence, we need more judges than normal in the social sciences. Send this email along to others who you think would be interested in judging.
Looking forward to working with you. Your advice and support are invaluable for our students.
Cheers,
