UCSD Near You: Going to the Ends of the Earth to Study the Beginnings of Time

Why study astrophysics from the South Pole? With an average annual temperature of -56°F, the South Pole’s clean, dry atmosphere provides viewing conditions in some wavelengths that are equal to those in space. The research collected by UCSD’s professor of physics, Brian Keating, may one day answer humanity’s greatest mystery: How did the universe begin? Professor Keating will share his experience conducting research in one of the most inhospitable regions on Earth and how his astronomical research landed him on the pages of middle school science books. The event will be held at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park so it should be accessible to many alumni who live in Central San Diego. Registration is free for UCSD Alumni educators--regular admission is $10 for UCSD Alumni Association members and $15 for non-members.

Students Learn About Careers at the High Tech Fair: March 9-10

How do you mesmerize middle and high school students with science exhibitions? "It helps if you have past experience as a carney or a blackjack dealer in Vegas," said Mike Chapin of Geocon, Inc., when describing how he makes a demonstration of liquefaction illicit "oohs" and "aahs" from teenagers. His company is one of the many San Diego businesses to exhibit and share their excitement about science and the process of discovery at the San Diego High Tech Fair, being held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, Wyland Hall, on March 9-10. This is the 13th year that scientists from cutting-edge, high tech and scientific institutions in San Diego will inspire students in grades 7-12 with real-life applications of
science and technology through interactive hands-on displays in a unique, learning-rich environment.

The High Tech Fair is a collaborative effort between the Science Alliance, the San Diego County Office of Education and San Diego City Schools. It has grown to include 50+ exhibitors and 2,500 students in attendance.
Exhibitors and sponsors cover the costs of substitute teachers and bus transportation so that students can attend the event. For the first time, a special Student/Parent Night session for the public will be held on Tuesday, March, 9, 2010 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Major sponsors include ResMed, GenProbe, Time Warner Cable, SAIC, Air Products, and San Diego County Supervisors Ron Roberts and Pam Slater-Price.

Castle Park High School Science Innovation Academy (SIA) Needs Equipment

Castle Park High School’s Science Innovation Academy is a biotechnology and health care focused program that began in the 2009-10 school year. As a California Partnership Academy, they are required to develop partnerships with industry and community members who can support our program with equipment. The sophomore-level biotechnology course is one of the foundations of this academy; students are challenged to understand the theory behind molecular biology while at the same time having hands-on experiences/labs and mastering technical skills that will make them competitive in the biotechnology and/or healthcare industries. They are in need of the equipment that will help our students learn those skills.

The academy serves at least 50 percent at-risk students, who have been pre-selected based on numerous data points, to participate due to their traditionally low achievement and/or unrealized potential. Castle Park's student population is 88 percent Latino. Seventy-three percent of the student body is socioeconomically disadvantaged, while another 36 percent are English learners. The average student is at high risk for dropping out and not earning a high school diploma.

The SIA is committed to providing students with the best possible experience: the richness of a diversified curriculum that is infused with usable career skills and embedded with opportunities (field trips, guest speakers, internships) that the average student at their school may not get due to our troubled economic times or overall lack of curricular focus. By the time they exit SIA, they hope to send students various post-secondary institutions to earn degrees and certificates related to biotechnology and healthcare so they may be part of a native San Diego workforce.

Equipment needed: shakers, incubator, autoclave (large), drying racks, large glassware (flasks, beakers, bottles), water baths, centrifuge (large-scale, refrigerating), micropipettes, micro centrifuges and microscopes (dissecting scopes especially, but also compound scopes).

To donate equipment our support Castle Park’s Science Innovation Academy please contact:
