Panelists' Bios

Gary Manning, VP Sales and Business Development, Sotera Wireless
Gary Manning has served as Vice President, Sales and Business Development for Sotera Wireless since September 2008. Mr. Manning has overall responsibility for Sotera Wireless sales strategy and business development activities aimed at establishing successful commercialization across all markets.

Mr. Manning has 20 years experience in the medical device arena. Prior to joining Sotera Wireless, he held various sales and marketing management roles with increasing responsibility at Datascope Corp., both in the United States and Europe. During his tenure with Datascope, he progressed from sales to international sales management, global training management, global market management, U.S. sales management, and finally to the position of Director of Sales and Marketing for the NetGuard business unit in 2006.

Mr. Manning completed his electronic engineering qualifications in the United Kingdom and received a bachelor of science degree in business/marketing in the United States.

Joleen Schultz is a Principal and National Practice Leader for Mentus Life Science.
Joleen is a communications specialist with more than twenty years experience in positioning companies and products within the healthcare/biotech/biomed industries. She is responsible for the strategic development and implementation of corporate and product branding and positioning, product launches, and marketing campaigns. Joleen has been instrumental in defining and positioning life science companies, regionally, nationally and internationally. Joleen is a long-time member of BIOCOM, where she is a co-chair of the Medical Device Group, an initiative to expand the organization¹s reach to better represent the interest of the region¹s medical device community. She is a former board member of UCSD Athena, a local organization for executive women in technology and life sciences, and the San Diego Regional Technology Alliance, a non-profit corporation dedicated to providing assistance to San Diego¹s technology community.

Attending Purdue University, Joleen received her bachelors of science degree in management. She later earned her M.B.A., with a specialization in marketing, at San Diego State University. Joleen completed her thesis on Corporate Image Development.

Lorie Shoemaker, Chief Nurse Executive for Palomar Pomerado Health (PPH)
Lorie Shoemaker, Chief Nurse Executive for Palomar Pomerado Health (PPH), oversees the nursing divisions for Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, California, a 317-bed hospital; Pomerado Hospital in Poway, California, a 107-bed hospital; two distinct part skilled nursing facilities in Villa Pomerado and Palomar Continuing Care Center, and Palomar Pomerado Home Health. Under Lorie's leadership, these five entities received Magnet® recognition in 2009, making PPH the first public health system in California to achieve this recognition.

She has 23 years experience with PPH, having fulfilled progressive management positions since 1992 and serving as Chief Nurse Executive since October of 2000. Lorie serves as adjunct clinical professor and lecturer for San Diego State University's School of Nursing; as clinical associate faculty for California State University - San Marcos (CSUSM) School of Nursing; and as a CSUSM Advisory Board member regarding nursing and public health program development. She also serves as the Co-Chair of the VHA West Coast CNO Council and as a member of Elizabeth Hospice Board's Mission Effectiveness Committee in Escondido, CA. She is an active member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE), having contributed from the perspective of the Chief Nursing Officer to the AONE Guiding Principles for Building the Hospital for the Next Generation. Lorie's work in the area of hospital design led to her appointment with the California Hospital Association's Joint Committee on Accreditation and Licensing with an emphasis on changing California regulations to support the widespread adoption and utilization of evidence-based design concepts in healthcare.

Lorie has achieved a Doctorate in Health Administration from the Medical University of South Carolina and a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Phoenix. Lorie is an alumnus of the 2004 Johnson & Johnson/Wharton Fellows Program in Management for Nurse Executives and in
2005 obtained certification in Advanced Nursing Administration (NEA-BC) from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Lorie was a finalist in the
2006 Nursing Spectrum Excellence awards' category of "Advancing and Leading the Profession" and was recognized by the Association of California Nurse Leaders (ACNL) for Excellence in Nursing Leadership in 2007.

Bill Spooner, SVP/CIO, Sharp HealthcareWilliam Spooner
Bill Spooner has been CIO for the past 14 of his 30 years at Sharp HealthCare. He has led an aggressive IT effort that has placed Sharp on the Hospitals and Health Networks 100 Most Wired list for all 11 years since the list was established. Sharp was an early leader in electronic health records, as the development site for a robust hospital EHR since the mid-1980s. Until its 2006 decision to adopt an integrated hospital clinical system, Sharp had adopted common applications across all facilities, utilizing a best-of-breed strategy towards its electronic medical record including a number of well-known applications on a common clinical desktop. Spooner also spearheaded the rollout of an industry-leading EHR in the Sharp medical groups. Sharp has received several awards for its foremost consumer web site and recently launched its mySharp patient portal.

Recipient of the 2009 John E. Gall Jr CIO of the Year award, Spooner is a member of the Healthcare Information Systems Executive Association (HISEA), the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and a Fellow in the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) which he served as Chair in 2006. He has worked with CHIME's Advocacy Leadership Team since its inception in 2004 and chaired the group in 2005. Spooner serves on the Editorial Board of Healthcare IT News. He also serves on the California Hospital Association Health Informatics and Technology Committee as well as a number of industry advisory councils. Spooner has served on a number of the CHHS workgroups addressing California's planning in conjunction with the HITECH Act.
