September Breakfast Meeting:
Accessing new sources of innovation for the pharmaceutical industry: Canoodling with biotechs
The US pharmaceutical industry was established more than 100 years ago and has been traditionally clustered in the Northeast corridor. The biotechnology industry exploded onto the scene in the 1970s and quickly clustered around the leading academic centers in San Francisco, Boston and San Diego. Recently, an interesting pattern has emerged-pharmaceutical companies situating major research facilities in "biotech territory". Pfizer, Novartis, Sanofi, Merck, Amgen and Takeda have recently established major research facilities in Boston. This move into Boston was largely driven by the desire to access the skilled scientists already resident in these areas. San Diego is also part of this movement with regional representation by nearly all of the major pharmaceutical companies.
Today we have gathered a panel of speakers representing four major pharmaceutical companies with a presence in San Diego; Lilly, Merck, Sanofi-Aventis and Takeda. David Kabakoff (Sofinova Ventures) will lead the discussion focusing on why these pharma companies have a presence in San Diego and how are they are leveraging this presence to provide additional sources of innovation. The discussion will be lively and audience participation will be encouraged.

Rémi Brouard, Vice President External Innovation, Sanofi-Aventis R&D
Tom Bumol, Vice President, Biotechnology Research, Lilly Research Labs
