Director, Supplier Portfolio

Biocom California Purchasing Group is a life science group purchasing organization (GPO) serving the largest statewide membership association, with 1,500+ California members in various sectors of the life science, biotech, medical device, and pharmaceutical industries. 

Position Summary:

The Director of Supplier Portfolio will be responsible for identifying new members and categories for the Purchasing Group (PG), analyzing suppler performance in collaboration with the contracts and business development team and driving efforts to enhance the analytics processes for PG revenue growth, member discounts, and identify suppliers with emphasis on reliability, capabilities, collaboration and commitment to the PG and members.  

This role is responsible for researching supplier options throughout CA as well as strategically planning, in collaboration with the contracts team for RFP’s and the development of new categories. This role will interact with a variety of key stakeholders including executive leadership, business development, contracts, and IT. This is a cross functional position that requires insight into the Life Sciences industry, the Life Science company, and associated supply chain needs.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Successfully develop short and long range portfolio planning, market research, and solve complex challenges to ensure optimal development and maintenance of services;
  • Build effective relationships, negotiate, influence, and create win-win situations with multiple stakeholders, including facility level executives, corporate staff;
  • Develop a staff with demonstrated expertise in project management, data analytics, materials management purchasing systems and vendor management;
  • Identifies and escalate critical issues and quickly resolves with creative solutions;
  • Assesses project requests to determine impact, cost, timeline, priority and recommended course of action.
  • Supports the deployment of production systems and provides post-production support.
  • Helps develop and maintain intellectual property, best practices, templates, and reusable assets.
  • Assist with developing best-in-class new supplier implementation strategy and approach which contributes in maintaining and growing membership;
  • In partnership with the marketing team, create, monitor and close out all Purchasing Group marketing initiatives to ensure consistency in communication across Biocom California and alignment to Purchasing Group marketing strategy;
  • Promote Purchasing Group suppliers through existing marketing channels;
  • Work with suppliers in San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles and Bay Area;
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain or related field;
  • A minimum of 12+ years of supply chain experience. Experience in the Life Sciences is preferred but other experiences are also acceptable (i.e. Healthcare supply chain, supply chain or procurement management consulting);
  • Eight (8) years or more operating within or selling into the life science industry;
  • Possess and apply a broad understanding of the Life Science market, Life Science company supply-chain;
  • Thorough understanding of the Life Science industry needs and challenges;
  • Experience in standardizing complex and disparate processes; experience in process improvement methodology, change management, and operational improvement in complex, interconnected systems.
  • Must be able to travel up 35% for supplier meetings, evaluation, and events.
