Biocom is the largest and most developed regional life science association in the country, serving the state of California for over 25 years by leading initiatives in advocacy, capital development, workforce and talent development, networking/best practices, and group purchasing. Serving over 1200 member companies, Biocom is a leader in cluster development and industry acceleration. Biocom opened a Los Angeles office in 2016 to accelerate success for the growing greater Los Angeles life science cluster, serve the ecosystem with programs and events, build bridges to partners, raise awareness of the vitality and strength of the L.A. life science industry across the country, and connect it to the other major life science hubs in California.

Job Description:
The Executive Director of the Biocom Los Angeles office has regional leadership duties of Biocom’s efforts in the greater Los Angeles area and will work with Biocom’s senior leadership team to execute on overall and Los Angeles-specific aspects of the association’s strategic plan. The Executive Director reports directly to Biocom’s CEO and will manage the Los Angeles operational team.

The Executive Director runs the LA office and takes a lead role in local and regional policy efforts, membership recruitment and retention, workforce development, collaboration with partner organizations in the area, capital development programs, events and networking, serving as a visible and articulate spokesperson, and acting as a key subject matter expert for the Los Angeles Life Science Industry. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead Biocom expansion efforts in Los Angeles, deepening strong relationships with key strategic partners from the public and private sector, academia, and other collaborating NPO’s, and forging new partnerships;
  • Manage a team of professionals within the Los Angeles office to ensure key strategic, tactical and business initiatives are executed;
  • Work with Senior Staff to create and communicate membership benefits to the Los Angeles market as well as drive attendance at industry supporting events, formative committees, and other engagement opportunities;
  • Create a successful environment for sales and retention objectives around membership, sponsorship, and purchasing group efforts;
  • Deepen and continue to develop local relationships in advocacy and public policy; Deepen and continue to develop relationships with the investor community; including local VCs, high network individuals and family offices;
  • Lead business development activities in the Los Angeles region;
  • Drive peak performance from staff on all cluster development support initiatives and manage an operational budget consistent with fiscally prudent growth.

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree required;  Minimum 10+ years in a leadership role with expertise in business development and/or public policy;
  • Minimum 10+ years of Executive experience within Bioscience cluster and/or Los Angeles County commercial markets;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a complex array of projects, operational and strategic goals, and relationships with internal and external partners;
  • Proven track record of creating value and revenue for an organization while maintaining fiscal responsivity;
  • Strong ability to foster relationships with local legislators, heads of academia, and business leaders throughout the greater Southern California region. Experience in this area a definite plus;
  • Excellent public speaking skills, and ability to speak with media/reporters (broadcast and print). Strong social media knowledge and experience;
  • Knowledge of Workforce Development a plus.

The Executive Director, Biocom Los Angeles Office will be a part of Biocom’s Senior Leadership Team and will be an integral part of Biocom’s overall strategic and operational direction. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
