For over 100 years, SDG&E has held exclusive franchises with the city to provide gas and electric services to residents and businesses. The franchise agreement reached in 1970 was set to expire in January of 2021. After a review process that included a public-outreach effort to educate city residents about the franchise agreements, virtual community forums, and an online survey that drew nearly 1,400 responses, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria announced a new agreement last week, which extends the SDG&E contract for ten years with an additional option to extend through 2041. On Tuesday, the San Diego City Council voted to pass the agreement with the stipulation that SDG&E pay the city $80 million for the gas and electric franchise and $20 million to fund climate equity projects. SDG&E officials must also appear before the City Council once a year to explain its rates and any increases proposed.
