On Friday, May 18th, Biocom Institute hosted an inaugural Veterans Career Fair Re-Imagined for veterans looking to transition from the military into the life science industry. We were pleased to have been joined by Ajinomoto Althea, BioLegend, Illumina, Inovio, NuVasive, Quidel, and Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute. Nineteen incredibly talented and professional veterans attended and had the chance to speak with managers and recruiters from each of these companies. We'd like thank Alexandria Real Estate for hosting this year's Veterans Career Fair.

Prior to the event, Biocom Institute and the guest companies were joined by Brent Robertson, Vice President of Business Development with QualStaff Resources, for an educational presentation on the benefits of hiring veterans and tips to help the companies translate veterans’ experiences to skills applicable in the life science industry.

The Career Fair Re-Imagined was the culminating event of Biocom Institute’s Veteran Mentoring Program that has been running since February of this year. Sixteen veterans were matched with veteran mentors within the life science industry. These mentors have provided help with resumes, interviewing skills, and networking, and have attended Biocom events with their mentees. The career fair was an opportunity for the veteran participants to showcase themselves and their skills to prospective life science employers. Said one recruiter present: “I was very impressed with what I heard from [the veterans] and the level of experience and responsibility they had in their positions. Brent’s opening talk was also a testimonial for what is possible and provided good insight to how veterans are groomed for success and leadership.”

Biocom Institute plans to continue its veteran programming throughout the year with networking events and a Veterans in Life Science Symposium in October.
