On October 24th, Biocom had the privilege of participating in the YoMo LA 2019 STEAM Convention, in Downtown Los Angeles. With over 14,000 students and educators from 160 school programs, it is safe to say this year was a huge success! The YoMo LA Convention is an incredible 3-day event full of educational booths, hands-on activities, workshops, and live shows. Some activity booths required critical thinking to solve challenging problems, while others allowed students to experience innovative technology such as virtual and augmented reality. Most students were able to wander the pavilion, explore which part of STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics) they felt inspired by, and take a deeper dive into that subject by engaging in activities and asking the exhibitors questions. This was also a great convention for local educators to learn about what interests their students, and what resources exist to assist with STEAM curriculum in Los Angeles.

Thanks to Biocom’s partnership with City of STEM, our LA team was able to host an activity booth in their portion of the pavilion right along side the Columbia Memorial Space Center, Two Bit Circus, and other City of STEM partners. Through our relationship with Thermo Fisher Scientific, they were able to connect us to Mark Elenbaas at LAXCO Inc, who provided his digital microscope and gave the visiting students a tutorial on how to use a high-powered digital microscope to view histology samples. For some children in high school, this was their first experience with a microscope and it was wonderful to watch them learn, ask questions, and gain confidence in themselves while using the scope.

YoMo LA is unique in that there is an emphasis on bilingual communication targeting the large Spanish speaking population that is LA. It was very encouraging to see so much diversity at this event, and to see the number of the partners and sponsors that stand behind the importance of STEAM education for all. Biocom and Biocom Institute were proud to be a part of this convention and we are looking forward to participating again in 2020!
