Biocom expects over 75,000 San Diegans to be front and center to rockets, explosions, reptiles and more as it kicks off the San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering. More than 20,000 local families, children and students will fill Petco Park on Saturday, March 7th, 2020 from 10 am to 5 pm for the 12th annual San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering’s EXPO Day. Attendees will enjoy a full day of free STEAM fun provided by hundreds of San Diego area businesses, schools, libraries, and museums. Presented by Illumina Foundation, EXPO Day will bring dozens of new and returning hands-on learning, interactive activities and experiments to inspire local students and families to engage in all things science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM). The event is FREE and open to the public.

You’ll notice a shift this year as festival organizers are working hard to make sure the “A” for arts is represented throughout the week, leaving an impact for all ages. “From Pre-K to gray, we aim to bring those ‘aha’ moments, and ignite curiosity across San Diego County”, says Sara Pagano, managing director. "In California, STEAM clusters are among the fastest growing in the world, and it’s vital that students engage in these fields to align with growing fields such as genomics, environmental engineers, bioinformatics and data analytics to meet workforce demands."

From an exploding cucumber, to the DNA of a strawberry, to bearded dragons and giant snakes, to detecting the flu, to slim and rockets, and rapping mathematicians, EXPO Day is sure to charm the likes of attendees of all ages.

This year, the week also aligns with the celebration of International Women’s Day, and the Festival is providing a conduit for many partners to combine that celebration along with the arts and sciences. Attendees on EXPO Day can take part in the beautiful representation of past, present and future Women In STEM by way of an interactive mural. Adults who would rather enjoy a few sips can celebrate with the Festival’s 21+ series, where fascination and fun collide!

The weeklong festival is an event that celebrates the diverse cultures and communities of San Diego County and works to inspire the curious minds of today’s tinkerers, explorers, star gazers and adventures to become tomorrow’s STEAM leaders. Festival week events are FREE and open to the public, unless otherwise stated.
