Big Data/Bioinformatics Committee

Mission Statement
San Diego’s life science cluster will be the leader in health innovation leveraging the collective impact and collaborative spirit of our interconnected public and private entities and leaders.

By harnessing the power of Big Data throughout the entire lifecycle of the health sciences, we will be able to better inform health decisions that ultimately lead to higher quality precision care to our population.

Impact Areas:

  • Help Biocom Members and the industry at large better understand the Big Data opportunity and help provide guidance/solutions for their challenges.
  • Work collaboratively to solve for big data challenges and to maximize opportunities that drive innovation for the cluster.
  • Promote and advance San Diego as the leading hub for health innovation including digital health, genomics and precision medicine.

Committee Make-Up
To ensure a strong working committee, Committee Members are required to attend/call in to at least three of four quarterly meetings and actively participate in committee workgroups. For San Diego residents, in person participation is strongly preferred though call in numbers will be provided for out of market or traveling Members. Friday lunch meetings take place quarterly and workgroup committees assemble as needed. The Committee is facilitated and led by a Biocom California Team Member and Committee Chair. Each workgroup is led by a Committee Member or Biocom California team member.

Committee Responsibilities:

  • Identify and recommend strategic initiatives that support the mission of the Committee
  • Actively participate and collaborate with committee members to implement strategic initiatives through Committee Workgroups
  • Assist in planning of workshops, including developing themes, and identifying and securing speakers.
  • Participate in community outreach to bolster Committee participation, as well as outreach to government offices and life science clusters throughout California.
  • Act as a resource to Biocom California members regarding big data matters.
  • Keep abreast of regulation changes that will affect the life science industry, and communicate changes to Biocom California staff and other committee members.
  • Give expert perspective/input on potential legislation and report to the Legislative Committee/Public Policy Oversight Committee for further Biocom California action.

Biocom CaliforniaResponsibilities:

  • Organize and facilitate committee and workgroup meetings to deliver on strategic imperatives and represent Biocom California in related external meetings
  • Actively recruit committee members to ensure a strong roster
  • Provide official communication to committee members through agendas, emails, and background documents for all committee meetings.
  • Organize, market and produce big data-related events and/or workshops and activities.
  • Ensure accurate and updated information in publications.
  • Promote the activities of the Committee

  • Committee Admissions Requirements: Must be a senior level employee with strong subject matter expertise in big data applications for the life sciences. Must represent an industry company or organization working to advance life science and better health outcomes in the Biocom California member regions. No service providers.
