Harnessing Big Data to Improve the Lives of Patients and the Healthcare system

Please join Biocom as we welcome the leading authority from this healthcare megaforce as he discusses how Kaiser is synthesizing and utilizing the vast repository of clinical data now available to them thanks to both their integrated health records investment and other visionary initiatives including smart medical devices and home based patient monitoring systems. Our audience will take away valuable insights in terms of how analytics of the vast datasets available are being utilized to improve care and rein in costs - and areas where innovative organizations can bring new solutions to the healthcare ecosystem.

Regulatory Updates you Need to Hear!

In 2011 the FDA and CMS launched a "parallel review" pilot program for concurrent review of medical devices for FDA approval and Medicare coverage. The program is part of a broader initiative by FDA to facilitate the development and approval of innovative new products. The pilot program also seeks to improve the efficiency of the review processes for both agencies. This program, along with a new Expedited Access program announced by FDA earlier this year, and a guidance focused on allocation of data collection between pre and post-market settings, present opportunities for companies with innovative devices to improve time to market. Hear updates on these new programs, as well as firsthand from the first company to successfully complete the parallel review process.

Additionally in this session, you will hear about the first significant changes in the European medical device regulatory environment in over 20 years. New regulations will replace the existing directives, and there is the possibility of a "Scrutiny Procedure" for high-risk devices. Notified bodies are now expected to conduct unannounced audits of manufacturers, suppliers and contractors. In addition, requirements for the quality and amount of clinical evidence prior to CE-marking approval are more stringent, and following product launch, many more devices will be subject to required postmarket clinical follow up (PMCF) studies.

Frank Pokrop, Director Regulatory Affairs, CareFusion

Private payer perceptions of devices, 2. Cryo-Logistics: Is dry ice sufficient?

Mark Sawicki , Chief Commercial Officer, Cryoport

With more biologics coming onto the market, it has never been more critical to keep materials in a stable, below the "glass-point" environment. Temperature excursions are incredibly costly and jeopardize years of research. Most biological activity, including those biochemical reactions that lead to cell death, are effectively stopped when brought to temperatures below the glass transition point of water solutions (around -136°C). Many organizations are losing incredibly fragile and time sensitive biomaterials due to temperature excursions. With a 10+ day dynamic holding time at -150° C and constant tracking and monitoring, we are able to virtually eliminate the risk of degradation.

Optimizing Your Logistics Network: Solutions for Complex Supply Chains

Aparna Mehta, Director of Customer Solutions, West Region, UPS

In an effective network, the value of the integrated whole substantially exceeds that of the individual components. This is particularly true of global supply chain networks, where actively managed alignment and connectivity of distribution and transportation assets can form a distinct competitive business advantage, directly impacting up to 75% of a corporation's operating results. This workshop will focus on distribution and transportation network design, management strategies and tactics to create value for your organization.

Creating a Culture of Accountability

Managing culture can be the greatest trap of any leader. Everyone can identify the cultural shifts that need to be made in their organization, but they don't always know the vehicle to get them there. All too often, we are left discussing what needs to change instead of knowing how to create the right movement within the team. This session will explain how to take accountability to make culture change happen effectively, accurately, and efficiently within the team. While many accountability initiatives focus on what people need to do differently, this discussion will help leaders add emphasis on how people need to think differently.

Medical Device + Internet of Things = Disruption. Dexcom’s Story, Challenge and Leadership

The Internet of Things is the big new technology paradigm shift galvanizing Silicon Valley venture capitalists,  but San Diego-local Dexcom was working with sensors and building complex medical devices to measure glucose continuously since 1999. Digitizing a glucose signal and publishing a continuous stream of glucose data has changed the lives of many Type 1 diabetics, but is also catalyzing a new ecosystem built entirely on CGM. Kevin will speak to Dexcom’s story, its vision for itself in the new era of Digital Health, and where Dexcom will go from here.

Not Just Noise: Transforming Big Data into Smart Data

When it comes down to it, big data is only a big deal when you can attach context and meaning to it. Smart data—that is the right data at the right time to the right person—can help professionals enhance and inform care decisions. That’s the prize; and while everyone’s got their eyes on it, not everyone knows how to get their hands on it. This session will focus on the Enterprise Informatics Business Unit strategy and how Illumina is working to provide solutions that look at data at every stage, from collection and protection to collaboration and storage.

The Health Plecosystem and The Behavorial Symphony of Wellness

The Plecosystem Economy describes the opportunity and necessity of collaboration across platforms, across disciplines, and across technologies in the world of personalized medicine.  To personalize care, we must consider all aspects of the human experience, a diverse array of data types, a diverse array of technologies to sense, analyze, and interpret these data, provide effective visualization so that the human members of the care team can apply heuristics, values, and objectives to those data, and then create a Behavioral Symphony of Wellness to motivate people towards healthier lifestyles.  Emerging technologies, including blockchain, will have a profound impact across platforms and across vertical markets.  It is increasingly difficult for narrowly focused solutions to find a successful path into the larger plecosystem, without first embracing the necessity of collaboration and strategic partnerships.  The ultimate goal for optimizing personal health is to use these modern technologies to restore ancient wisdom of health and happiness.

Precision Medicine in the AWS Cloud

It will take more than an individual scientific discovery or single research organization to unlock major innovations in precision medicine. Effective precision medicine will be the result of an integrated approach among a broad array of players in the life science industry – the future state will be composed of thousands of scientific discoveries with new, shared data systems and architectures. To enable this era of research, large amounts of data needs to be collected in its original form so that researchers and scientists can develop different avenues of analytical insights from the same big data sources. Today’s life sciences organizations are developing new flexible data warehouse architectures in the cloud to make this possible. These structures do not enforce a predefined schema and at the same time maintain the security controls required to protect patients and their healthcare information.

This session introduces key concepts in big data cloud architectures and presents the main components to successful implementation. We will discuss critical success factors and pitfalls to avoid, as well as operational insights into security, governance, search, indexing, and metadata management. We will then ground the conversation with case studies highlighting the architecture patterns used by San Diego based life sciences organizations that are transitioning to cloud based precision medicine research.
