STEM

The Biocom Institute envisions a community with a well-trained workforce for high-demand, high-skill, and high-earning jobs and provides meaningful workforce development programs to achieve this goal. To sustainably develop the workforce, we recognize the importance of starting early and therefore provide K-12 student and teacher Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) outreach programs. We additionally deliver life science-focused innovative and industry-vetted professional development programs, targeting a variety of demographics.

Our STEM Initiatives include the San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering, which reaches more than 75,000 San Diegans each year. It also includes a newer program, STEM In Your Backyard. These STEM initiatives allow for face-to-face interaction with STEM professionals—positive and diverse role models—and deliver experiences to encourage youth to stay involved and to pursue STEM careers. Our STEM Initiative provides a holistic approach to STEM education by incorporating parent education so parents from all communities understand the impact STEM will have on their child’s future; teacher professional development so in-classroom lessons can be as effective and exciting as possible; and youth-to-industry interaction both in an engaging external setting and inside the classroom.
