San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering

About STEM Week and Expo Day

The San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering Week is the largest event of its kind in Southern California. It’s a collective effort between industry, business leaders, government, community organizations, public outreach centers, academia, schools and school districts, and parents. The Festival began 11 years ago primarily science and engineering-focused, with a goal to provide experiential activities in these fields to diverse populations.

The overwhelming success of the formative years of the Festival proved to be a catalyst for what the Festival would swiftly evolve into – a comprehensive San Diego County community event that celebrates the diverse cultures, communities and populace of San Diego, and works to inspire the curious young minds of today’s tinkerers, explorers, star gazers, and adventurers to become tomorrow’s San Diego leaders.

2020 STEM Week Events

EXPO Day at Petco Park: The Festival kicks off with its largest event of the week, Expo Day! More than 24,000 San Diegans attend this free community event and interact with over 125 exhibitors and STEAM professionals from California’s STEAM community and beyond.

Women in STEM: This program provides a space for young women to celebrate and exhibit their own achievements and learnings in STEM and to be motivated by a host of women who have moved the needle in STEM. Held twice during STEM Week, Women in STEM includes presentations from female leaders in STEM with audience Q+A, and exhibitions from all-girls STEAM organizations from around the county.

STEM Possible: STEM Possible is a career-pathways program geared toward high school juniors and seniors. High school juniors and seniors are brought to two locations during STEM Week to hear from a panel of inspirational professionals and then participate in interactive workshops that provide an opportunity for the students to identify their strengths, interests, and core values—and connect their skills and interests to potential career paths in the STEAM industry. Finally, students participate in a career-fair style professional networking session that connects the students directly to some of San Diego’s local STEAM role models.

21+ Adult Science Series: Held at different bars and breweries and fun venues throughout STEM Week, the 21+ Adult Science Series is aimed at encouraging the connection between the life science industry and the broader community through innovative experiments, current research and engaging discussions.
