When You’re With Biocom – You Are Biocom

Welcome to You(r) Biocom: A Year-Long Campaign Aimed at Showcasing Member-Driven Programs that accelerate life science success.

March Feature: Inspire

Accelerating life science is the unifying mission here at California’s leading life science trade association. We live and breathe it every day in the connections we make, partners we choose, programs we build, and the future we advocate for on behalf of our members.

We are inspired by this industry’s relentless pursuit to improve the human condition. From the community that supports us, to the innovators that lead us, and all of the dedicated lifelong learners in between, we are honored to share in every step of our members’ journey to life science success.

Biocom envisions a community with a well-trained workforce for high-demand, high-skill, and high-earning jobs and provides meaningful workforce development programs to turn this vision into reality.

STEM Initiatives

Biocom Institute exposes students to STEM at an early age through firsthand experiences up and down the state. Our traveling STEM in Your Backyard programs and Mission: STEM Possible high school career exploration programs in San Diego, our partnership with the Los Angeles City of STEM along with STEM Prep Schools’ Biotech Maker Faire, and our STEM mentorship and community college program support in the Bay Area are all examples of free events aimed at supporting youth in their quest to learn the STEM skills needed for the next generation of jobs.

STEM Festivals

EXPO DAY is the first and largest event in our week-long San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering (March 2-10). The daylong celebration at PETCO Park takes place this year on Saturday, March 2nd from 10am-5pm and will feature more than 130 local businesses, corporations, and organizations providing interactive, hands-on STEM exhibits and activities for budding K-12 science lovers. Last year, over 65k kids, parents, scientists, educators and community members participated throughout the week in our programs, and more than 23k children, parents and STEM enthusiasts attended EXPO Day at PETCO Park.

City of STEM is LA’s largest celebration of STEM and takes place the entire month of April with a series of amazing events and awesome activities geared towards igniting a community of critical and creative thinkers throughout Los Angeles County. Come stop by Biocom’s booth at the City of STEM Kickoff event on Saturday, April 6th starting at 10AM at the Columbia Memorial Space Center, and join us at other hands-on experiences throughout the county all month.

The California life science industry seeks to address so many of our world’s challenges; our hope in doing our small part is to inspire others to do the same.

Volunteer Opportunities

Biocom members regularly get involved with our Biocom Institute to inspire STEM leaders of tomorrow by contributing their time, talent, and resources. With a wide range of offerings that put volunteers face-to-face with veterans, students, and educators, members enjoy unique opportunities to directly engage and share their experiences with those who need it most.

Individuals can become a life science mentor or STEM Ambassador, while organizations are invited to host an internship or visit a science or technology classroom with us throughout the year. Our annual Biocom Golf Tournament is also a great way for San Diego members to give back to their local community by raising funds for veteran workforce programs.

Biocom Gives Back

One of Biocom’s five core values is Passion for the Cause. We make it a priority to participate in fundraising events with other nonprofit groups across California including the San Diego Walk for Alzheimer’s, Feeding San Diego, Great Strides Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Padres Pedal the Cause, Luau & Legends Surfing Invitational and Bay Area Breast Cancer Walks.

In 2019, under the direction of our new Board Chair Christophe Schilling, we’ll partner with the Ocean Discovery Institute to plant native species in urban communities throughout San Diego. We believe in the mission of the life science industry and we are dedicated to working together as a united force to ensure its growth and viability.

Your Biocom membership makes you part of the team helping to inspire confidence and competence for a more talent-rich California life science workforce.

Professional Development for Every Level in Every Region

From early education STEM programs, to high school and college life science internships, and discounts to several industry courses through our education partners, Biocom aims to accelerate California’s personal and professional development from “K through Gray” across the state.

All of our regional teams participate in career fairs, community college engagement opportunities and certification programs. Last year, we co-hosted our first commercialization boot camp in the Bay Area with the help of five regional industry and educational partners, and this year marks our third partnering with Cal State LA and others to co-host a Bioscience Entrepreneurs boot camp in Los Angeles.

Veterans Initiative

Biocom Institute’s Veterans Initiative inspires and mobilizes veterans to transition into a life science career. The program gives veterans unique access to a variety of life science industry professionals and executives to help them successfully transition into a field they’re passionate about.

Complete with job skills workshops, an industry-focused career fair and mentorship pairing, this program provides a holistic approach to addressing skills gaps, hiring and job-search challenges, and a unique direct connection between veterans and the life science industry. As a Biocom member, you’re encouraged to become a veteran mentor, participate in events, or join our committee.
