May is National Bike Month. Localities throughout California generally host Bike to Work Days during May to encourage bicycle commuting among both new and seasoned cyclists. It’s also a time to advocate for improved bicycle infrastructure and safety.

Current circumstances are leading Bike to Work Days to be rescheduled for the fall, and some areas are offering virtual tools to bike while not commuting and to prepare for bike commuting when we return to our offices. Bay Area Bike to Work Day has been postponed from May 14th to September 24th, and Los Angeles Bike to Work Day will be September 22nd.

In San Diego, the association of regional governments, SANDAG, has shifted gears and prepared a variety of digital options to support San Diegans as they GO by BIKE. SANDAG’s iCommute program has free employer bike services and a recorded webinar that employees can watch to learn essential tools for bike commuters. Biocom partnered with member Alexandria Real Estate to host a virtual Bike to Work workshop on May 12th.

SANDAG is also piloting a Shared Streets program as an alternative way to promote Bike Month while addressing public health concerns. Grant funding is available to each of the 18 cities and the county in the San Diego region for temporary improvements that create safe and healthy spaces for people to bike, walk, and more during the COVID-19 pandemic.
