Last month, University Lab Partners opened a wet lab incubator across the street from UC Irvine, to assist the university in commercializing its research endeavors. Most research on the UCI campus is funded by government grants and the school is state sponsored – this has been a hurdle for faculty and student researchers in taking their work to the market. The startup incubator, which is open to the public, provides previously unavailable lab facilities independent of a university setting in this area. Use of the facility is available through a membership, which includes access to UCI’s small business center and innovation and entrepreneurial program.

Biocom will be the life science ecosystem partner for ULP. Their tenants will be Biocom members, and we will work together to continue to grow the industry in Orange County.

Last week, a $3 million federal grant for ULP from the Commerce Department of Economic Development Administration was announced, which will help the facility purchase specialized equipment to be shared by the incubator’s companies.
