Biocom California’s San Diego Members Meet with City Staff to Discuss Permitting Reform

Last week, Biocom California and the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce convened interested members to discuss ways to address challenges with the City of San Diego’s Development Services Department, the entity that processes building permits. The pandemic and a shift to online service have, in our view, caused major delays in permitting processes.

Biocom CA has long worked with the city on permitting issues most important to our members: reliable timelines and consistency among inspectors and plan reviewers. These issues have been exacerbated due to closures because of COVID-19, staff turnover, and lack of ability to connect with city staff. At last week’s meeting, members of both organizations brainstormed ways the department can improve, and what we can do to help.

Biocom CA, the chamber, and a few of our members plan to meet with city leadership on June 23rd to discuss our input and ways to work on process improvements together. If you’d like to provide your input, or if you have any questions, please contact Melanie Cohn.
