At its meeting on July 23rd, Biocom’s San Diego Facilities Committee voted to support the initiation of a community plan amendment for BioMed Realty’s Towne Centre View project. BMR is requesting to add 500,000 square feet of density to the project site in UTC, allowing a total of 1,000,000 square feet of scientific research space to be built.

The project, on Towne Center Drive north of Eastgate Mall, currently consists of two sites, which are being used as R&D office space and storage for Mid-Coast trolley construction. The proposed project would unify the two sites and create a 32.47-acre R&D campus of 1,000,000 square feet of development. Besides the increase in density, the project plans to comply with all existing requirements consistent with its Scientific Research designation.

The Community Plan Amendment initiation is the first step in a process to allow the project to proceed. The University Community Planning Group unanimously supported the initiation, which will now go to the Planning Commission in late August or early September. BMR expects to also complete a full Environmental Impact Report.
