The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) remain without a leader as the confirmation of Chiquita Brooks-LaSure as CMS Administrator has been delayed.

The Senate Finance Committee voted on April 22 on her confirmation, split 14-14 along party lines, forcing a discharge petition. GOP Senator Cornyn, from Texas, objected to Brooks-LaSure because the Biden Administration revoked Texas’s Medicaid expansion waiver. On May 12, the Senate voted 51-48 to discharge the nomination. A vote on her nomination is expected in the coming days.

Brooks-LaSure testified before the Senate Finance Committee on April 15 and discussed her priorities, including addressing Medicare solvencies and protecting Medicare for current and future beneficiaries. She plans to strengthen existing programs to improve quality, lower costs, and expand access, including implementing the reforms in last December's appropriations bill and the American Rescue Plan. She committed to working with Congress to expand access to innovative therapies, procedures, and models of care.
