San Diego Community Power: Commitment to the Community
“San Diego Community Power is truly a community-driven public agency. We value opportunities to connect with the communities that we serve and raise awareness around the importance of clean energy and energy efficiency,” said Karin Burns, Chief Executive Officer of San Diego Community Power.
As a not-for-profit public agency, with a mission to provide affordable clean energy for an equitable and sustainable future for San Diegans, San Diego Community Power serves nearly one million San Diegans. Since its founding in 2019, Community Power has been focused on what matters most to its customers: clean, affordable electricity. Over the past seven years, Community Power has gradually become the official clean energy provider for the cities of San Diego, Chula Vista, Encinitas, Imperial Beach, La Mesa and National City, as well as the unincorporated communities of San Diego County.
Community Power has no shareholders, so it’s able to reinvest revenues back into our community. Here, the impact is immense: lower electricity rates, customer programs, rebates and incentives and, through a myriad of education programs, community outreach and volunteer involvement that expands access to clean energy education and highlights these subjects for the community, and in particular, students.
A key avenue for this public engagement and education is through Biocom’s K–12 nonprofit affiliate, Generation STEAM, and their San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering. The San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering is the largest STEAM festival in California, held annually each March at Petco Park and drawing 20,000 attendees.
“The Festival is a truly unique opportunity for us to spark curiosity about clean energy, as well as encourage participation in the San Diego region’s clean energy transition–whether that’s through future career exploration or simply practicing energy efficiency at home.”

More than three years as Biocom members have also allowed for further opportunities to connect to, and embed in, the community. In Burns’ estimation, Biocom’s member community provides the support and strengthening of an ecosystem that allows Community Power to thrive. Additionally, they benefit from the distinctive Biocom networking events and collaboration that truly foster meaningful connections for their organization.
Community Power has set a goal of 100% renewable energy for the San Diego region by 2035 or sooner. Looking ahead, they see a bright future where they continue to power communities with clean, cost-competitive energy and provide rebates, incentives and other offers that create potential for customer savings and ultimately support a more resilient energy grid.
“In 2026, we’re thrilled to be launching the San Diego Regional Energy Network, or SDREN, in partnership with the County of San Diego. SDREN offers 10 energy efficiency programs that shape how people access clean energy solutions, while ensuring benefits reach every corner of the region,” remarks Burns.
This commitment to choice and sustainability, as well as a focus on giving back to the community proves San Diego Community Power is more than an energy provider. It is a partner for San Diegans in building a clean, equitable future.
