Biocom Institute Partners for Internships

IMPORTANT NOTICE: As of April 8, 2020, the difficult decision has been made to cancel the Biocom Institute Partners for Internships program for summer 2020, in consideration of the health and safety of our employees and our students. We recognize the efforts that students have made putting together your applications and we applaud your enthusiasm for the program. We are in the process of exploring virtual programming for students to observe scientific research at the Salk Institute. Please continue to check our website for updates about future program possibilities.

Biocom Institute Partners for Internships

Biocom Institute is excited to announce the Biocom Institute Partners for Internships (BIPI) program, designed for high school students who would like to participate in paid internships at the Salk Institute or others in the summer of 2020. The BIPI program is designed to target high school students, ages 16 through graduating senior, who have a passion for science. BIPI consists of an unpaid one week pre-internship  “bootcamp” training held at Miramar College followed by a 7-week paid internship.

The purpose of the program is to offer students hands-on experience in a laboratory and to encourage students to pursue their education in science following high school. Students work in a lab setting conducting experiments on the latest research. This exposure to the latest research brings new ideas, technologies and skills to assist them with future STEM careers. Beyond the time spent in the lab, participants in the program attend company tours and career panel sessions, as well as participate in seminars and other events that aim to increase the scope of their exposure to science.

The program concludes with a student symposium where participants present their summer research experiences  to an audience of fellow scientists, interns, and family members. It is a chance for all attendees to see what great work the interns accomplished in only 8 weeks of laboratory experience.Interested high school students who will be at least 16 years old by June 29th, 2020 are encouraged to apply to participate in this summer program. All completed applications are accepted for evaluation.

In addition to the requirements of the summer research experience provided by the Salk Institute there will be several internship slots, called “Linton Fellows”, who will receive additional exposure to the understanding of business/entrepreneurialism in the biotechnology industry. These scholars will be required to participate in additional project components outside of the regular program research activities.

Students interested in being considered for these Linton Fellows positions should complete the short-answer questions in the online application (150 word maximum for each question) marked Linton Fellows.

At the end of the internship, students will have:

  • Completed a maximum of 280 hours of paid work experience in a research laboratory
  • Produced a scientific poster and abstract highlighting summer research projects
  • Presented work in front of peers, mentors, teachers, family and industry partners
  • Participated in seminars, career panels, networking events and other enrichment activities

Application Deadline: March 31, 2020

Program Dates: June 22, 2020 through August 14, 2020
