Dr. Caldwell is Managing Director at Red Tree Venture Capital and a biotechnology executive and scientist with deep expertise in venture creation and drug development. His career includes founding innovative companies and advancing novel therapies from discovery through clinical translation. He maintains strong ties to the San Diego and San Francisco Bay Area biotech communities and global pharmaceutical leaders.
Before Red Tree, Dr. Caldwell served as CEO of Inception Therapeutics, Versant Ventures’ San Diego–based discovery engine, and as Venture Partner on Versant’s investment team. He co-led the formation of Chinook Therapeutics, acquired by Novartis for $3.5 billion, and helped found Lycia, Belharra, Adaxion, and Light Horse Therapeutics, serving as founding CEO and board director. He was previously an entrepreneur-in-residence at Third Rock Ventures.
Dr. Caldwell has contributed to four commercial drugs, held senior leadership roles at leading biotech and pharmaceutical companies, and earned degrees from UC Berkeley and Stanford University.
