User-added image

Mr. Barnes is the Vice President of Program and Process Excellence at illumina. He is responsible for the Product Development Process, Program Management Office, Platform Management Teams, and Product Development Business Operations.

Mr. Barnes joined illumina in 2016. Under his leadership illumina has significantly increased their on-market support capability through the Program Management Teams, continued to mature their product development processes, and enhanced their product development function.

Prior to joining illumina, Mr. Barnes was the Vice President of R&D for Beckton Dickenson’s Alaris infusion pump business (formerly part of CareFusion). During his time at Alaris, market share for the Alaris Medley infusion system grew from roughly 33% to over 70% due, in large part, the implementation and scaling of bi-directional communication between the Alaris Medley system and leading hospital EHS systems led by Erik and his teams. This capability significantly reduced the possibility of user error, one of the leading problems associated with infusion therapy. Another critical factor in the growth and success of the Alaris system’s market share was the focused effort Erik drove on product quality and system robustness, including cyber security. Under his leadership, the Alaris Medley platform earned the top assessment in an independent cyber security analysis. Additionally, throughout Mr. Barnes’ leadership tenure, compliance of the Alaris Medley system to federal regulatory standards was repeatedly confirmed by all internal and external audits, including the FDA, showing consistent improvement in successive audits.

Prior to his role as VP of R&D for the Alaris business unit, Mr. Barnes held roles of VP of R&D and Director of R&D for the Pyxis business unit of CareFusion, Director of R&D, Manufacturing, Field Service, and Sourcing for Asters Inc, and numerous other leadership roles at companies ranging in size from Fortune 500 to startups. Additionally, Mr. Barnes holds 8 U.S. patents.

Mr. Barnes is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy where he received a BS with merit in Electrical Engineering. Following graduation, Erik went on to serve in the U.S. Navy’s nuclear submarine force, completing 3 deployments and achieving the designation of Nuclear Engineer.

Erik lives in Solana Beach, CA with his wife Catherine and their two children.
