New Year, New Opportunities
Happy 2023! We hope your year is off to a good start. It was great to experience a live 2023 JP Morgan Healthcare Conference, Biotech Showcase, WuXi Global Forum, and other events last week in San Francisco. Thank you to everyone who attended despite the rainy weather. Most people seemed positive and ready to get to work, make deals, and move important technologies forward. We have a lot in store for our members this year, including our 13th annual Global Life Science Partnering & Investor Conference in San Diego at the end of February, and more inspiring programming. San Francisco’s $728M Budget Deficit
In an effort to tackle a looming budget deficit, San Francisco Mayor London Breed ordered budget cuts across city departments. Over the next two years, the projection shows a deficit of $200M in the first year and $527M in the second year. Public safety, staffing shortages, homelessness and mental health remain top priorities.
New South San Francisco Interim City Manager
South San Francisco names Sharon Ranals the new interim city manager as the City Council looks for a permanent replacement to Mike Futrell, who announced his departure for Riverside County in November. In the meantime, Ranals will continue her involvement in the projects she was working on as assistant city manager. We wish Mike all the best in his new role as city manager of Riverside, and thank him for his expertise and partnership over the past several years.
San Francisco Board of Supervisors Elects New Board President
After 17 rounds of voting, Supervisor Aaron Peskin broke the six-vote threshold and was elected to the post. The vote was at a stalemate for 12 rounds before Peskin nominated himself in hopes of ending the contest. The division seen here for San Francisco is a major outlier from most votes in recent history.
Biocom California Unveils NIH Funding Infographics
Biocom California has developed infographics to visualize where in California funding from the National Institutes of Health is going. In FY 2022, California received $5.4 billion in NIH funding, which funded almost 9,000 grants throughout the state. Infographics were made for California, San Diego County, Los Angeles County, and the
Bay Area.
GO-Biz Now Accepting Applications for $120M in Tax Credits
The California Competes Tax Credit (CCTC) is an income tax credit available to businesses that want to grow in California. Biocom was a key partner in creating this program and many growing life science companies have been successful in their applications to the program. Applications are due by Monday, January 23, at 11:59 pm and application assistance is available.
Governor Newsom Unveils 2023-24 State Budget
Governor Gavin Newsom unveiled his budget plan on January 10 which includes a projected deficit of about $22.5 billion. Despite the need to restrain some new spending or enact programmatic cuts, the state currently enjoys reserves of about $35.6 billion which should ease budget contraction in 2023.

MedTech Innovator Accepting Applications for 2023
MedTech Innovator, the medical technology industry’s global showcase and accelerator for innovative medical devices, digital health and diagnostic companies, is seeking applicants for its 2023 program. Companies selected will receive high-profile visibility; access to investors, stakeholders, and decision-makers; a network of mentors and peers; and participation in a customized educational curriculum. Accelerator companies will also compete for up to $500K in non-dilutive funding. MedTech Innovator does not charge or take equity for participation, and there is no application fee. Apply Now: Asahi Kasei Pharma Open Innovation Program
Asahi Kasei Pharma is seeking researchers at universities, institutes, and enterprises outside of Japan to create innovative new drugs for its Open Innovation Program 2023. The company offers collaborative research opportunities with funding and scientific contribution, including drug discovery support, as well as continued collaboration up to technology transfer. Researchers specializing in new drug target molecules, drug candidates, therapeutic concepts and technologies in a variety of fields are encouraged to apply: autoimmune; renal; bone; neurodegenerative diseases and pain; and drug discovery platform technologies. Research expenses can range from $50,000 to $200,000 per year, for research periods of one to three years. Applications close on February 27, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. PST.
