Welcome back to our quarterly newsletter on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) designed specifically for the life science industry. Our strategic DE&I initiative aims to take action to advance a welcoming and thriving industry that recognizes the value of individuals with diverse backgrounds, talents, experiences, and perspectives.
We are channeling the momentum from Hispanic Heritage Month to continue to implement and integrate DE&I practices throughout our daily lives and in the workplace. See below for new programs, resources, interviews, and events meant to inspire positive change throughout our member network. We invite all members to join us in our commitment to drive meaningful action by subscribing to our newsletter, attending our DE&I events throughout the year, visiting our DE&I Resource Center, and signing our DE&I Member Pledge.

DE&I Pledge Spotlight: Marsh McLennan Agency
Marsh McLennan Agency, our endorsed Purchasing Group supplier of employee health benefits and insurance solutions, signed our DE&I Member Pledge in June 2021. During the pandemic, Latinx employees at the company created a new colleague resource group, COLORES (Community of Latinx Organizers Rising for Education and Solidarity). Joanna Tapia, client service executive and MMA West regional chair for COLORES, said the group came together to provide a safe space for employees to discuss topics that impact the community and celebrate their diverse heritage.
Members of COLORES also use their platform to share the importance of inclusivity with colleagues across the country. During National Hispanic Heritage Month this year, Tapia said the group focused on uplifting colleagues’ voices and sharing their stories. MMA employees in regions outside of California had discussions around the different terminology used within the community and hosted potlucks with various foods. In San Diego, the company had an end of Latine/Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. Tapia said that it’s important for companies to support their employees when they have interest in creating a colleague or employee resource group. “Creating a group can seem overwhelming, however if leadership is there to support throughout the journey, it will make it rewarding for all involved,” she said. “It is important for employees to feel heard and seen. Only then will they feel
as though they belong.”

How Genomics Can Support Employers’ DE&I Initiatives
Health equity aims to ensure everyone can access healthcare services and medical advancements, and efforts to achieve that goal need to include people with genetic disorders as well. Racial and ethnic minority populations with predispositions to genetic conditions may face challenges accessing medical-grade genetic testing for screening, diagnosis, and treatments. Healthcare is also often inconvenient or inaccessible to low-income employees who may lack paid time off or transportation to visit the doctor. Addressing health inequities requires new access opportunities, such as employers offering genetic testing as a benefit, supporting their population health initiatives, and reaching underserved populations in their workforce.
Genomic Life, a Biocom California member based in San Diego, accelerates access to genomics for everyone. They partner with employers to close the inequity gap with a novel benefit that facilitates lifetime access to genetic insights, optimizing health and well-being. The genome benefit management program includes a suite of genomic-based solutions to prevent disease through genetic screening, diagnose disease accurately, and tailor clinical support resources for those with cancer, which is a genetic disease.

A Recap of Our Importance of Practicing DE&I in Life Science Event
Diversity, equity, and inclusion should be at the forefront of company culture. How can it be woven into hiring processes and throughout work environments? Last month we convened a discussion with several of our Purchasing Group endorsed suppliers, including Thermo Fisher Scientific, Marsh McLennan Agency, Cultura, and PIMCO (a partner of Retirement DNA) to reflect on how companies can continuously improve DE&I efforts. Top takeaways were to call on leaders to create honest conversations with all employees, share knowledge obtained at DE&I workshops, and critically assess and measure progress.

ICYMI: National Hispanic Heritage Month
In September and October, we celebrated National Hispanic Heritage Month by highlighting Hispanic leaders in life science in our Member Spotlight and Insights: Linda Sierra, senior vice president of business development at Bench International; and iLatinx, Illumina’s newest employee resource group for Hispanic and Latinx-identifying employees.
Sierra’s company specializes in finding executive talent for life science companies. Her career spans 30 years and she’s a longtime advocate for inclusion in the industry. She provides insight on meaningful things companies can do to truly have diverse representation on boards and leadership teams, how she prioritizes giving back to the community, and why her heritage is a source of pride. Members of iLatinx shared with us how a few Illumina employees started the group in 2021 and that it has grown to 175 members. Employees involved with iLatinx say the group offers a sense of belonging and career development opportunities, and ways for them to engage in community outreach—they are active partners with programs such as Biocom California’s Generation STEAM, which exposes students to careers in life science.

Play a Role in Solving Racial Inequity Through Mentorship
One of our newest members, the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, is the only HBCU (historically Black colleges and universities) in California. The university has an opportunity for professionals in the biomedical and biotech fields to mentor students enrolled in its Biomedical Sciences program. Generation STEAM, Biocom California’s nonprofit affiliate, is helping recruit mentors to join the Biomedical Sciences enrichment program. Although the university is in Los Angeles, mentors can be located anywhere in the world but must commit to virtually connect with their mentee twice a month from January 2023–August 2023. In addition to making a lasting impact on the lives of our
future life science workforce and promoting diversity in the industry, mentors will receive a $500 stipend for one student mentee or $1,000 for two mentees. Learn more by contacting Silvana DelPiccolo. The deadline for applications has been extended to December 12.
