Highlights from Our Annual Workforce Symposium
Last month, the Biocom California Institute kicked off its 6th annual Life Science Workforce Symposium. For the first time, the event was simulcast in three of our membership regions: San Diego, Greater Los Angeles, and the Bay Area. The event provided job seekers—especially veterans and people from underrepresented populations—with information about opportunities in the life science industry and how they can best transition to new careers in the field.
The symposium featured speakers and panelists from the Biocom California Institute, Merck, Amgen, Triplebar, Illumina, and more. Keynote speaker Austin Hamilton reflected on his journey from the U.S. Army as a chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear specialist to a career in the life sciences—today he is an EH&S Specialist II at Thermo Fisher Scientific. Austin noted that Thermo Fisher Scientific has a Veterans Business Resource Group and dedicated Military Talent Registration Portal, where can veterans can sign up for job alerts and connect with the company’s talent acquisition team.
See more highlights from the symposium here. For more information about our Veterans in Life Science fellowship, contact Paulina Fonville.

Recap: National Hispanic Heritage Month
During National Hispanic Heritage Month, we featured Maritza Diaz, CEO of ITJuana, in a Member Spotlight in the September edition of LifeLines. ITJuana helps life science companies develop technology centers of excellence in Mexico. Maritza, who grew up in Ecuador, says Tijuana is a lesser-known technology hub and part of her company’s mission is introducing clients to the region and the competitive edge of doing business there. Earlier this year, ITJuana was included in Inc. Magazine’s list of 5,000 fastest-growing companies.
