City Releases New Draft on University Community Plan Update
On March 15, the City of San Diego released the second draft of the University Community Plan Update, which will provide guidance for how the life science hub will develop over the next 30 years. Biocom California has been on the plan update committee since it was formed over five years ago and will be submitting comments related to building housing that is accessible to our life science workforce. The city also released the second draft of Blueprint SD, which will help guide where homes and jobs near transit should be located throughout the city.
Potential Changes to Coastal Commission
San Diego legislators are pursuing changes to powers held by the California Coastal Commission. Various state bills have been introduced to allow additional bike lanes, accessory dwelling units, and mixed-income housing in the coastal zone. Critics claim that the commission has undermined the state’s housing and climate goals, favoring strict limits on development.
City Council Committee Votes to Advance Sales Tax Increase
The San Diego City Council’s Rules Committee voted unanimously to advance a proposed one percent sales tax increase that could go before voters on the November ballot. The proposal would increase San Diego sales tax from 7.75% to 8.75%. The added tax would go to funding core services like police, fire, and infrastructure.

Industry Connection Events for Educators
On January 26 and February 13, we had over 70 high school educators visit Illumina’s headquarters as part of Generation STEAM’s Industry Connection Events for Educators. Attendees learned about the genomics industry, next-generation sequencing technology and careers in the life science industry, and had the chance to tour the Illumina campus and network with Illumina employees. We want to thank Illumina for hosting us, as well as all the employees who volunteered their time. Are you interested in sharing the amazing work that your company does with high school educators to inspire the next generation of the workforce? Reach out here.
