A Retrospective Study of Participants in Alpha Clinic Trials

Mentors: Sheldon Morris, MD, MPH, Talyn Hughes, Assistant Clinical Research Coordinator, Julissa Gonzalez, Assistant Clinical Research Coordinator

Introduction and Objectives: This study aimed to determine demographic differences in regenerative medicine trials participation and assess the incidence of secondary cancers.

Methods: A retrospective review was performed of individuals screened and enrolled in Alpha Clinic trials between 2014 and 2023. Deidentified data were analyzed in SAS v9.4.

Results: Of 256 participants, 113 enrolled in solid tumor cancer, hematologic malignancies, and non-cancer studies. There were twice as many men as women (168 vs. 85). 29 (11.3%) participants were Hispanic, 9 (3.5%) Black, and 7 (2.7%) Asian. Black individuals were significantly more likely to screen fail (88.9%, p=0.045). Seven new cancers in 6/78 hematological malignancy participants.

Conclusions: Disparities in trial enrollment were observed and warrant further investigation. No secondary cancers due to treatment were apparent; however, given the limited number of participants, further research is recommended.
