Gary S. Firestein, M.D., is distinguished professor of medicine and joined the UC San Diego School of Medicine faculty in 1988. He later served as senior director of immunology at Gensia, overseeing drug discovery efforts, before returning to UC San Diego, where he served as chief of the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology and was subsequently named senior associate vice chancellor of health sciences. Gary has served as editor-in-chief of Firestein and Kelley’s Textbook of Rheumatology from the 8th through 13th editions. He has written over 450 articles and book chapters and has a Google Scholar H index of 120, with over 65,000 citations. He is also co-founder of lgnyta, a biotech company that went public in 2015 and was acquired by Roche in 2018. Gary is the past chairperson of the FDA Arthritis Advisory Committee and has served on the Board of Directors of the American College of Rheumatology and the NIH Council.
