Keep Innovation in Berkeley Moves to City Council
City staff have incorporated input from Planning Commissioners, innovation ecosystem stakeholders and public comment at 2024 Planning Commission meetings to propose recommendations to update city zoning rules to Keep Innovation in Berkeley. The updated staff recommendations were presented at a Public Hearing at the Planning Commission meeting on July 17 and will be presented to City Council before the end of the year.
New Interim Fire Chief for SF Fire Department
Mayor London Breed announced Chief Sandy Tong will take over as the Interim Chief of the San Francisco Fire Department. Chief Tong will replace Fire Chief Jeanine Nicholson, who announced her retirement earlier this month. Chief Tong will serve as the Interim Chief until a permanent replacement is found.
BART Extension Project Secures Federal Funding, Budget Gaps Remain
The federal government awarded the BART Silicon Valley Extension to Santa Clara project over $5 billion, leaving a funding gap of about $1 billion remaining. Valley Transit Authority officials have proposed scaling back parts of the project to stay within budget. Biocom California is advocating on behalf of members and has signed a letter in support to the Federal Transit Administration to fund the project as part of its Capital Investment Grants New Starts program.

Pathways to STEAM Conference: Inspire the Next Generation
On November 12, 2024, 60 high school students from San Francisco Unified School District will attend Generation STEAM’s Pathways to STEAM Conference to gain industry exposure and hear from experts in various STEAM topics. Industry companies and community organizations have the opportunity to apply to host a workshop station during this day-long conference. This program sends an inclusive message about what makes a successful STEAM professional and encourages the students in attendance to pursue their interests in STEAM.
