UCLA’s New Research Center Could Boost Biotech in LA
University of California, Los Angeles recently announced the purchase of a former mall for the purpose of establishing a new biotech hub. The property will be the new home to two research organizations: the UCLA Center for Quantum Science and Engineering and the newly created California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy at UCLA. The $700 million deal, $500 million of which was funded by the state of California, has the potential to attract more research and life science companies to the region.

Pasadena Approves Zoning Changes Initiated by Biocom California
Pasadena City Council voted in favor of a package of land use zoning changes aimed at expanding and attracting the life science industry. The revised regulations include greater allowances for building heights and use of roof space, removing distinctions between office and non-office uses for R&D, and easing restrictions on parking and open space requirements. Biocom California worked closely with the city throughout the process to write and approve these changes, and we are happy to have a hand in making the city more life science friendly. LA City Council Resumes Meetings
The Los Angeles City Council returned from winter recess to discuss homelessness and housing. The city is deciding if the Community Investment Family Department should lead homeless prevention efforts and instructed staff to report on expanding the affordable housing preservation program.

Inglewood Receiving $1 Billion for Transit Connector
More than $1 billion in federal funding will be given to support the Inglewood Transit Connector Project, covering 50% of the anticipated cost. The project is intended to address a transportation gap between the Metro and popular tourism, housing, and commercial destinations.

We are excited to introduce a new capital development initiative, the Venture Hub Showcase program. This extension of our Venture Hub ecosystem is designed to assist founders in refining pitches in preparation for Investor and Partner Days.
Launching in March, the Venture Hub Showcase program will offer founders a platform to practice their pitches, pinpoint areas for improvement, and participate in themed showcases as they unfold. To receive information on how to get started, you must complete your profile by Friday, February 16.
