Charles Drew University Combatting Disparities
On May 2, Biocom California’s Los Angeles Office helped celebrate member company Charles Drew University at their inaugural Biomedical Science Enrichment Program (BSEP) PitchFest as the fellowship cohort unveiled their groundbreaking ideas to combat health disparities. These innovative solutions were be presented TedX-style directly to NASA members and biomedical professionals, giving them a real-world, high-value experience while showcasing their talent and impactful ingenuity.

Biocom California Shines a Spotlight on LA’s Westside
April’s Spotlight series brought together a panel of industry professionals to highlight UCLA’s acquisition of the former Westside Pavilion mall and its future as the UCLA Research Park, along with additional opportunities for life science growth on the Westside. The panel discussion emphasized the importance of readily available R&D spaces and policies that can facilitate future lab space to bolster the biotech ecosystem around UCLA’s exciting new investment.

Potential Natural Gas Water Heaters and Boilers Ban
The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) is poised to vote on a proposed amended rule that would phase out natural gas water heaters and boilers in LA, San Bernardino, Riverside and Orange Counties. If passed, it would apply to all new and existing commercial and multifamily units, with mandatory compliance by 2026 for new buildings and 2029 for existing. SCAQMD’s projected costs fall between $49 and $97 million per year, but outside experts show five to ten times higher.

Los Angeles City Council Puts Redistricting Commission on Ballot
The Los Angeles City Council unanimously voted to place a Charter Amendment on the November ballot, establishing an Independent Redistricting Commission for the city. City Council President Paul Krekorian emphasized the Committee’s work, incorporating public input and expert opinions. The amendment aims to remove redistricting from Council control and shift to a voter-driven process.

Takeda Hosts Industry/Educator Connection Event with Generation STEAM
Last month, in partnership with Generation STEAM, the K-12 STEAM education and workforce development arm of Biocom California, Takeda opened its doors to 32 educators and administrators from 18 different schools and districts. The educators toured Takeda’s facility and lab spaces and connected directly with employees to better understand career pathways to industry. This event is part of a larger program to infuse career exposure and industry-vetted life science curriculum in high schools and colleges in the Greater Los Angeles Region.
