CBRE Releases Life Sciences Research Talent Report
The life science industry is booming and a record number of people in the U.S. are graduating with degrees in biological and biomedical sciences, according to CBRE’s recent Life Sciences Research Talent 2022 Report. Some key findings from the report note that the number of life science professionals in the U.S. grew by 79 percent between 2001 and 2021, whereas all other occupations grew at a rate of 8 percent during the same time period. Total employment within the industry has rebounded since the downturn in 2020, and it’s growing at its fastest pace on record. As for specific roles and jobs, the number of medical scientists within the sector has seen the biggest increase. However, the report notes that competition for finding talent is as fierce as ever, and that “a furious search for talent presents challenges as the industry seeks to meet growing demand for its products and services.” The study also lists the top 25 cities where biotech companies can find life science research talent, with San Francisco (No. 3), San Diego (No. 5) and Los Angeles/Orange County (No. 7) all ranking in the top ten, as well as cities that have a high concentration of PhDs and are hubs of emerging talent: Sacramento; Salt Lake City, Utah; and Albuquerque, New Mexico.
