Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Newsletter | March 2022

Committed to Real and Lasting Change in the Life Science Industry

Welcome back to our quarterly newsletter on diversity, equity, and inclusion designed specifically for the life science industry. Our strategic DE&I initiative aims to take action to advance a welcoming and thriving industry that recognizes the value of individuals with diverse backgrounds, talents, experiences, and perspectives.

We are channeling the momentum from Black History Month and Women’s History Month to continue to implement and integrate DE&I practices throughout our daily lives and in the workplace. See below for new programs, resources, interviews, and events meant to inspire positive change throughout our member network.

Workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion have been at the forefront of many life science companies’ initiatives lately, but there is still work to be done. We invite all members to join us in our commitment to drive meaningful action by subscribing to our newsletter, attending our DE&I events throughout the year, visiting our DE&I Resource Center, and signing our DE&I Member Pledge.

ICYMI: A Recap of our Black Biotech Trailblazers in Life Science Event on 2/16

In February, we hosted our first Black Biotech Trailblazers in Life Science event in celebration of Black History Month. Attendees heard from Enoch Kariuki, CEO of Lengo Therapeutics, Stanley Lewis, M.D., co-founder and CEO of A28 Therapeutics, and Paul Mola, founder, president, and CEO of Roswell Biotechnologies on their experiences as Black biotech CEOs. In addition to sharing their own personal challenges and successes, each of the panelists expressed how our industry can improve its diversity efforts to be a more supportive and inclusive sector: “Our lifeblood is innovation. If we really want to get beyond our current plateaus and have more breakthroughs … we’re going to have to introduce new ideas from new people. Diversity is that engine. Diversity is innovation. It’s synonymous with life science.” Read the full recap and see the recording here.

SD Chamber Initiative | More Women on Boards

One of our community partners, the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, has created the All Our Talent: Women on Boards and Commissions initiative. With support from Mine The Gap, the new initiative is focused on addressing the need for more women on corporate, nonprofit, and government-appointed boards and commissions in our region.

Veterans in Life Science

Our initiative provides veterans access to a variety of life science industry professionals and executives to help them pursue careers in the field. This program provides a holistic approach to addressing skills gaps, hiring, and job-search challenges. Our 2022 Military Fellowship cohort is off to a great start. This year, we have 20 fellows, including the largest group of women fellows since the program’s launch. The fellowship kicked off with an orientation and career fair with 10 companies participating. The six-month fellowship continues with mentorship pairings, training sessions, and workshops designed to assist our veterans in finding a new career in life science. If you are interested in hiring a veteran or supporting this DE&I initiative, please contact us.
