About Salk Institute For Biological Studies, The
Non-Profit Company
The 26-acre campus of The Salk Institute overlooks the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla, California, just north of downtown San Diego. The majority of the laboratories are housed in two buildings designed by the well-known modernist architect Louis I. Kahn in collaboration with Jonas Salk specifically for the pursuit of scientific research. In total, the Salk contains approximately 15, square feet of laboratory space. All mechanical equipment, such as water lines, ventilation, etc., are confined with interstitial spaces between floors, allowing labs to be completely open and easily reconfigured to meet the changing needs of the scientists. Specialized facilities include NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, mass spectometry, light and electron microscopy, flow cytometry, image analysis, DNA and peptide synthesis and sequencing, microarray analysis, computational modeling, and human embryonic stem cell facilities.
