Huy Lam

Biocom California Institute Graduate Education Fellow

Huy is a PhD Candidate in the Bioengineering Department of UC San Diego under the mentorship of Dr. Kun Zhang. He is developing a high throughput single cell multi-omic sequencing method to capture RNA and DNA methylation from the same cell. Huy is also passionate about education development for underserved students and has led the department high school outreach program partnering with Clairemont High School, a title I school with about 54% of students economically disadvantaged. By leveraging faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students to he successfully ran annual biomechanics, genomics, and dissection demonstrations at Clairemont High School. He also brought Clairemont High School students to UC San Diego to present their annual 3D printed prosthetic projects at a student conference called Bioengineering Day, facilitating interactions between the undergraduate community and San Diego’s biotech industry. Since leading the program in 2017, Huy increased faculty participation from 2 to 13 and reached roughly 270 students. As a 2021-2022 BCI Graduate Education Fellow, Huy is developing and teaching a bioinformatics module as part of the Illumina Genomic Discoveries high school program.
